About Disability SA

Last Updated Jan 2009

Disability SA is a division of the Department for Families and Communities.

We want to ensure citizens can easily access services, tell their story once, and live independently in the community. Support ranges from clinical and equipment services to practical advice and information offered at the Independent Living Centre and through our Disability info website. We also work closely other community based services including non-government disability service providers.

We also aim to influence the way in which other government agencies include people with disabilities in their programs and services and we aim to connect people with disabilities to the services they need from single access points.

Disability SA has regional offices located throughout South Australia, from Ceduna to Mount Gambier. Please note that in most cases the services provided by Disability SA are restricted to people with significant levels of disability.

Office for Disability and Client Services

The Office for Disability and Client Services leads strategic planning, policy development and resource allocation for the disability sector in South Australia, and provides advice to the Minister and Chief Executive. The office funds 100 agencies, 99 of which are non-government, to provide a range of services for people with disabilities. As well as coordinating the Disability Services Provider Panel to approve service providers, we also monitor the level and quality of service delivered.

Other key areas of work include:

  • Representing the Department on national working groups and contributing to the development of national disability policy.
  • Managing funding arrangements with the Australian Government through the Commonwealth State Territory Disability Agreement, data collecting and activity reporting.
  • Developing policies and implementing a strategic framework for the disability sector.
  • Promoting and monitoring action on SA’s Promoting Independence Policy.
  • Advocating for disability rights and equitable treatment of people with disabilities and their families.
  • Providing advice and coordinating planning for social inclusion of Aboriginal people with disabilities.
  • Administrating the Companion Card Program.
