Emergency housing

If you're homeless or need emergency or supported accommodation, the Department for Families and Communities have supported accommodation services for youth, families, single adults and those experiencing domestic violence in country regions through Families SA. Housing SA also has a listing of accommodation services you can be referred to, some of which are listed below, if your situation is urgent.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can also refer to the section specifically on Aboriginal emergency, short term and supported accommodation.

For after hour emergency contact Crisis Care on 131 611 between 4.00 pm to 9.00 am weekdays and 24 hours weekends and public holidays.

  • Anglicare SA
    Provides emergency accommodation for homeless families and newly arrived refugees. 
  • Boarding House Outreach Program
    Provides services to boarding house residents to help them access and maintain independent accommodation. The program also links residents to other agency resources and supports.

  • Byron Place Community Centre
    Provides a chance for disadvantaged and homeless people in Adelaide to change their lives with self respect and dignity. The Community Centre provides initial contact, counselling and advocacy, and basic services to homeless and alcohol or other drug affected people. At Byron Place Community Centre, members are encouraged to move into other programs suited to their needs. The centre also provides housing-related legal assistance to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
     
  • Caravan Park Outreach Support Service
    Operates in the Onkaparinga and Marion council areas and provides a range of support and referrals to low income caravan park residents.

  • Catherine House
    Provides supported accommodation to women who are homeless and assists them to move toward independent living. Also provides housing-related legal assistance to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Free advice is provided by qualified lawyers working from homelessness services in Adelaide.
     
  • Centacare
    Provides support and accommodation services in various regions for different groups.
     
  • Domestic Violence Crisis Service

  • HomelessnessSA
    A confidential telephone assessment and referral service to access available accommodation and advice on other housing.
     
  • Housing Legal Clinic (HLC)
    Provides housing-related legal assistance to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Free advice is provided by qualified lawyers about credit, debt and bankruptcy, victims of crime, fines, housing and tenancy law, equal opportunity and anti-discrimination law, social security, mental health law and guardianship and administration.
     
  • Hutt Street Centre
    A drop-in support centre to assist single males to find appropriate accommodation. Also provides housing-related legal assistance to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Free advice is provided by qualified lawyers working from homelessness services in Adelaide.
     
  • Magdalene Centre
    Provides housing-related legal assistance to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Free advice is provided by qualified lawyers working from homelessness services in Adelaide.
     
  • The Salvation Army
    Provides a range of homeless services throughout Australia.
     
  • Service to Youth Council (SYC)
    Young people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, can contact SYC’s Trace-A-Place (TAP). TAP is the central assessment and referral agency for emergency and supported accommodation through the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP).
     
  • South East Regional Domestic Violence Services
    Provides assistance to women (and their children) that are experiencing domestic violence, are homeless, in crisis, or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Appointments for assessment are made by contacting the service.

  • St John's Youth Services
    Provides emergency accommodation for young people.
     
  • St Vincent De Paul
    Runs a mens’ night shelter in the Adelaide metropolitan area and also refers people to emergency and community housing. Fred’s Vans are also run by Vinnies.
     
  • Street to Home
    Helps to find stable housing for people sleeping on the streets, in parks and cars, in the inner city.

  • Trace-A-Place (TAP)
    Provides referrals and information about emergency accommodation, supported youth housing and share housing for young people under 25 years of age who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Also includes programs for young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
