Private rental assistance

Last Updated Dec 2009

In South Australia you need to pay a bond (usually four weeks rent) and two weeks rent in advance to get private rental housing.

If you are unable to pay for a bond and you meet the eligibility criteria, we can provide a bond guarantee to the property owner (or agent). A bond guarantee is an understanding by Housing SA to meet any reasonable claims of the landlord when you leave the property.

If you do not pay your rent on time, keep your property in good condition and meet the terms of your lease agreement, the landlord will make a claim against the bond guarantee to pay for any rent arrears or damage. If this happens you will have a debt that you will have to pay back to Housing SA.
