Housing options for people with a disability

Last Updated Jan 2010

There are many accommodation services available for people who have a disability and want supported accommodation or to live independently or semi-independently in the community.

Disability SA and community housing

Disability SA provides a variety of options for people with a disability and has exclusive access to housing provided by community housing associations. You must be eligible for services from Disability SA in order to qualify for this type of housing. See Eligibility and referrals for more information. Access to accommodation services is through referrals from Disability SA Regional Community Services to the Accommodation Placement Panel, with priority given to people assessed as being in most urgent need.

The Office for Community Housing and the Community Housing Council of SA Inc (CHCSA) both provide housing for people with a disability as well as information and referrals to enquiries made by the general public. Visit the Office for Community Housing website to see a list of housing associations which provide specially adapted homes for disabled people.

Housing SA - Specially adapted homes and home modifications

If you are applying for Housing SA accommodation and identify yourself as a person with a disability, this may be taken into account when your housing needs are assessed. If you already live in Housing SA accommodation and your circumstances change, you may be able to have housing modifications made to your home to help you live independently.

Use the housing modifications application form to apply for modifications to be made for your home. An occupational therapist or physiotherapist will also need to complete a special needs assessment form to recommend modifications.

Please forward the form to your local Housing SA Office when complete

Supported residential facilities (SRFs)

SRFs provide accommodation and personal care to people who may have a mental illness or disability or who are aged. SRFs are mainly privately owned with fees usually set at 80% of pension or other government benefit plus rent assistance. The entry process is by negotiation with individual operators. Visit the Seniors Information Service website for further information.
