If you do not have the money to pay for the cost of a funeral for a family member, we may be able to help.
You may be eligible to receive financial assistance to cover the costs of a basic funeral and other related expenses through the Funeral Assistance Program run by the Department for Families and Communities.
Eligibility
Eligibility criteria apply. The income, assets and liabilities of the deceased and their close relatives is taken into account when assessing eligibility for assistance through this program.
Assistance may be provided in the form of a small grant, or a payment made direct to the funeral director to cover the cost of a basic funeral.
How to apply
If you have not already made arrangements for the funeral with a private funeral director, you may be eligible for assistance covering the cost of a basic funeral in both metropolitan and country regions of South Australia.
If you have already contracted a private funeral director and have received an account for funeral expenses which has not yet been fully paid, you may be eligible to receive a small grant to help you pay the funeral costs.
For further information or assistance, contact your nearest Families SA office and arrange a financial counselling appointment. You will need to provide a copy of the original funeral account and details about any payments made to date.
