Community Benefit SA Board

Community Benefit SA is the public name given to the Charitable and Social Welfare Fund. The Fund was established under Section 73B of the Gaming Machines (Miscellaneous) Amendments Act 1996. It was set up by the Government of South Australia to distribute $4 million each year from gaming machine taxes by providing financial assistance for charitable or social welfare organisations. This is done in accordance with the directions of a Board appointed by the Minister for Families and Communities.

The Board

Chair: Mr Gary Storkey (appointed October 2010)
Gary established HomeStart Finance in 1989 and was CEO for 20 years until his retirement. Gary has a focus on strategy, vision and product; a combination that has resulted in the creation of the most successful government mortgage lender in Australia. Gary is currently a consultant at Lizard Drinking Pty Ltd and actively involved with several organisations. Gary is a Board member of the Adelaide Benevolent Society, the Botanic Gardens & State Herbarium of Adelaide and the President of the Port Clinton Progress Association. 

Mr Declan Andrews (Appointed August 2006)
Environmental Consultant and Campaign Coordinator, with experience in the sustainability of Indigenous and rural communities. He has also been a producer and director of short films and video productions, both in Australia and overseas.

Ms Tisha Ashworth (Appointed August 2006)
Manager of the bookshop at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Coordinator of texts for Library and University requirements, extensive experience in bookshop operations around South Australia.

Ms Michelle (Shellie) Jones (Appointed August 2007)
21 years experience in the disability field in South Australia, HACC Coordinator, Community Centre Coordinator, Bachelor of Applied Science in Disability Studies, involvement in various school committees and governing councils, committee member of Local Residents Association. Currently a stay at home mum.

Ms Chris Birch (Appointed August 2007)
Semi-retired public sector employee with extensive experience at senior management level in social justice and women’s issues, transport and road safety. Former Deputy Registrar of Motor Vehicles. Member of Passenger Transport Standards Committee.
